8-day itinerary
Sustainability is at the core of travel in Costa Rica. Whether you’re booking your trip independently or through a travel advisor, you have many choices of ecolodges, boutique businesses and public transportation while traveling.
day 1
arrive in san josé
Arrive at Juan Santamaría international Airport to begin your adventure in San José. This bustling capital city is your jumping-off point to eco-experiences throughout the country. Take some time to explore downtown where you can reach several attractions on foot – including Mercado Central, Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica and Plaza de la Cultura. The city’s culinary scene has brought forth several farm-to-table restaurants and fusion concepts that celebrate local ingredients.
days 2-3
tortuguero national park
Head to the town of La Pavona and take a boat transfer to Tortuguero National Park, one of the world’s great ecotourism destinations. This is where the freshwater meets the sea, and is home to a protected population of sea turtles that nest on these beaches. Visit the experts at the Sea Turtle Conservancy learn more about these endangered creatures. You’ll see more wildlife on a leisurely canoe tour of the creeks and lagoons. Local lodges integrate with the natural surroundings, often with clear views of the rainforest while macaws and monkeys hang around overhead.
days 4-5
tenorio national park
Find nature’s magic in the volcanic Cordillera de Guanacaste. Here, the Rio Celeste Waterfall tumbles into a translucent pool of water that sparkles in an incredible azure hue. Tenorio National Park is home to lowland and tropical rainforests. Hike through trails where you can easily spot white-faced capuchin monkeys and other local wildlife, and bring your binoculars for a bird-watching spectacle that may include bare-necked umbrellabirds, toucans and high-flying crested guans.
days 6-7
arenal volcano national park
In this volcanic area, sustainable lodges may include their own natural hot springs and views of Arenal Volcano. Immerse yourself in this “living laboratory” filled with lush vegetation and a diverse array of wildlife such as white-faced capuchins, coatimundi and the elusive resplendent quetzal may all appear during your stay. The nearby dam is the main source of hydroelectric energy in the country, contributing to Costa Rica’s success as a sustainable destination. Explore by zip line and hanging bridge, go hiking or horseback riding, and spend time unwinding in the healing hot springs fed by the volcano’s geothermal activity.
day 8
depart from liberia guanacaste airport
If you have time to spare, take a side trip to Catarata Llanos de Cortés waterfall or to a rescue center for pumas. Otherwise, head straight to the airport and start planning your return to Costa Rica.
