sustainability is more than a practice; it’s our way of life
Sustainability is embedded into every aspect of life in Costa Rica. We are proud of the incredible rich biodiversity on our land and in the water, of our well-preserved cultural traditions and our economic growth – and it’s essential that we protect all of these important resources. Much of our electricity comes from renewable resources such as hydrogen, wind, geothermal and solar power; and 30% of our territory is protected natural land including national parks and preserves.
Our Certification for Sustainable Tourism Standard has been recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council and has become a global model for best sustainable tourism practices. As a nation we have accomplished a lot, and there is still so much more to do. We invite you to be a part of the experience by choosing certified lodges and tour operators, and traveling mindfully when you explore our protected lands and local cultures.
costa rica's protected areas
We proudly harbor 6% of the Earth's biodiversity within an array of environments: volcanic mountain ranges, Pacific and Caribbean beaches, tropical rainforests, dry forests and savannas. Our National System of Conservation Areas preserves 25% of the national territory, ensuring that the natural resources that make Costa Rica such an incredible place to explore are protected for generations to come.

sustainable tourism
The Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) developed the Certificate of Sustainable Tourism (CST) program for lodging and tour operators so that travelers can be informed of how their experience affects natural, cultural and social resources. While you may still see classifications on a 1-5 scale, there are currently two levels of CST to look for during your travel planning: BASIC and ELITE.
