1. CHIRRIPO NATIONAL PARK

Parque Nacional Chirripo. Foto: Roberto RamosWithin this park you can find the highest mountain in the country, Mount Chirripó, measuring some 12,532 feet above sea level. Majestic landscapes of great geological and ecological value surround the area.

The many glacier formations are one of the most interesting geo-morphological discoveries found in Chirripó; they attest to the existence of ice masses measuring some 125 miles long and dating back some 25,000 years.

LOCATION: Situated in the Talamanca mountain range, northeast of San Isidro de El General, Pérez Zeledón.

2. TAPANTI – MACIZO DE LA MUERTE NATIONAL PARK

Foto: Roberto RamosThis park houses important ecosystems with numerous rivers and a variety of landscapes, especially in the Tapantí sector, known as one of the rainiest areas in Costa Rica, as well as in the Macizo de la Muerte, where its highest point is dominated by grasslands. From Cerro Asunción, you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean Ocean.

There are around 45 species of mammals, as well as 260 bird species.

UBICACION: Located in the Orosí district, Cartago.

SERVIES OFFERED: General information, laboratories, restroom services, hiking trails, lunch areas, and lookout points. On the outskirts you may find restaurants, lodging, and private camping grounds.

3. LA AMISTAD INTERNATIONAL PARK

Parque Internacional La Amistad. Foto: Roberto RamosThis park is considered one of the most biologically diverse protected wildlife areas in the country due to its range of altitudes, severe climate changes, and soil types, which make for diverse eco-systems and a large number of local species.

LOCATION: Located in the Talamanca mountain range, in southern Costa Rica, up to the Panamanian border.

SERVICES AND FACILITIES: The park has a small amphitheater, two camping areas with a capacity for 30 people, a sheltered picnic area, a flora and fauna observatory in the primary forest, and a lookout point located on the park's border where visitors can appreciate the panoramic views of the Coto Brus and Buenos Aires areas in Puntarenas.
