1. ARENAL VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK

PN Volcan Arenal. Foto: Roberto RamosThis active volcano is one of the most highly promoted tourist attractions in Costa Rica. It first erupted in 1968 and is still active and famous for its illuminating lava streams, particularly at night.

This protected area is a living laboratory due to its geological and geo-morphological riches, as well as its complex biological process development, which has evolved from virgin vegetation to a primary forest.

LOCATION:It is located in the mountainous La Sierra de Tilarán region and the plains of the northern region, some 10 miles from La Fortuna and 25 miles from Ciudad Quesada.

SERVICES OFFERED: General information, restroom services, potable water, hiking trails, parking, and a volcano lookout point. Food and lodging services can be found in the area.

    2. CAÑO NEGRO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

    RNVS Caño Negro. Foto: Roberto RamosA large number of endangered species exist here. It is a wetland with migratory aquatic birds and mammals, as well as some endemic freshwater fish. There are also swamps and lagoons throughout the reserve.

    Its main attractions include the lagoon and more than 2,174 acres of wetlands, migratory aquatic birds, reptiles like the caiman, as well as fish and swamps.

    LOCATION: It is located in the lower Rio Frío basin, in the northern plains.

    SERVICES OFFERED: General information and potable water. It attracts national and foreign researchers and students.
